Combining separate PDFs into one ordered document

Merging solves a specific problem: you have content spread across several PDF files that should be read, printed, or filed as a single sequence. Re-exporting from the original apps often isn't an option — the files may come from different people or different programs entirely.

When merging is the right move

• Assembling a job or grant application. A resume from Word, a cover letter exported as PDF, and scanned certificates each arrive as separate files. Merge them into one PDF in the exact order a portal expects so a reviewer opens a single attachment.
• Building a signed contract packet. Combine the agreement, an appendix, and a separately scanned signature page into one file before archiving or emailing it.
• Consolidating monthly statements or invoices. Drop twelve bank or utility PDFs in, set the order chronologically, and produce one year-end document for your accountant.
• Compiling a study or reference pack. Pull selected pages from several lecture PDFs — using the per-file page range — so the result holds only the sections you actually study, not every full file.
• Interleaving fronts and backs of a duplex scan. If your scanner produced odd pages in one PDF and even pages in another, the per-page thumbnails let you weave them back into correct reading order.

How the merge actually works

This tool counts each file's pages in your browser with pdf.js the moment you add it, so every page shows up as a draggable thumbnail before anything is sent. When you click Merge, the page list — which file, which page, what rotation — goes to the server, where Apache PDFBox imports each requested page into a fresh PDF in the order you set.

That import is a page-level copy, not a re-render. Text stays as text (selectable and searchable), vector graphics stay vector, and embedded fonts carry over. Nothing is rasterized or re-flowed, so the merged file looks identical to the sources and doesn't blur the way a "print to PDF" pass would. A rotation you apply is written into that page's rotation value, so it sticks in the output and in print.

Practical tips

• Order is set by the thumbnails, not by upload order. You can add files in any sequence and fix the order afterward by dragging.
• Page size and orientation are preserved per page. Merging an A4 document with a US Letter one gives you a mixed-size PDF — that's expected, not a bug. Each page keeps its native dimensions.
• Merging doesn't shrink files. The output is roughly the sum of the parts. If the result is large, run it through [Compress PDF](/compress-pdf) afterward.
